Not sure which needle taper to choose? Standard tapers measure 0.5 mm, while long tapers extend to 0.7 mm, making them slightly sharper. A long taper will produce a finer, more precise line compared to a standard taper. If you’re new to fine line work or still perfecting your technique, it’s recommended to start with a standard taper for more control and a softer touch. Once you’re comfortable and confident, you can move on to a long taper to achieve those extra-crisp, delicate lines.
Here’s a clear dot point explanation of common tattoo needle gauges:
-The #08 gauge (0.25 mm), often called bugpins, is an extremely fine needle used for fine line, ultra-detailed work, microrealism, and permanent makeup. It produces very soft shading and crisp, delicate lines.
-The #10 gauge (0.30 mm) is slightly thicker than bugpins but still very fine, making it ideal for fine line tattoos, smooth shading, and softer gradients. It offers a good balance between ink flow and precision.
-The #12 gauge (0.35 mm) is considered the standard tattoo needle thickness, commonly used for general lining and colour packing, holding and depositing more ink per stroke for bolder lines.
-The #14 gauge (0.40 mm) is a heavier needle diameter, best for bold traditional lines, solid colour packing, and covering larger areas, as it deposits more ink quickly but creates more skin trauma.
In general, smaller gauge sizes create finer detail with less trauma, while larger gauges allow more ink flow for bolder, heavier results.
